Suspect Killed After Driving Into Killeen Mall

Five people were taken to hospitals in Killeen after a police chase ended when the subject of the chase drove into a mall and then killed by a Department of Public Safety officer.

The unidentified man was fleeing authorities starting near the city of Belton in Central Texas in the early evening, then the pursuit continued the 15 or more miles to Killeen, when the driver of the truck suddenly careened into the front doors of the J. C. Penney store at Killeen Mall, sending shattered glass into the air as shoppers scrambled to get out of the way.

There were reports of some shoppers being hurt as the suspect drove into the store, but there's been no confirmation from officials.

Details such as how the chase began or identities of the truck driver or those injured have not been released.

The Texas DPS said early in the evening that social media reports that there was an active shooter at Killeen Mall were incorrect -- there was no active shooter at the mall.

More details are expected from the DPS as its investigation continues.
