President-elect Donald Trump has suggested that he wants to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal in his latest controversial remarks about foreign policy with allied nations.

Over the weekend, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce Paypal co-founder Ken Howery as his pick or U.S. Ambassador for Denmark.

"For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," Trump wrote as he announced his pick.

Howery hasn't directly commented on Trump's remarks but said he looks forward to working with the “U.S. Embassy Copenhagen and U.S. Consulate Nuuk in Greenland to deepen the bonds between our countries.”

In another controversial stance involving an allied nation, Trump claimed the U.S. was being "ripped off" due to "highly unfair" fees imposed by Panama for ships passing through the Panama Canal.

The Panama Canal was controlled by the U.S. until 1977 when it was handed over to Panama. On Sunday (December 22) during a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix, Trump said he would demand the “Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, quickly and without question,” unless the Panamanian government met its “moral and legal” requirements.

In a video message, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino slammed Trump's comments, saying “Every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belong to PANAMA, and will continue to be.” Trump shot back at Mulino on Truth Social, writing “We’ll see about that.” The president-elect also shared a photo with the U.S. flag over the canal.

“Welcome to the United States Canal!” text on the photo reads.
