Caitlin Clark was named the TIME Athlete of the Year for 2024 after she took the country by storm during her senior season at the University of Iowa and made her debut in the WNBA. Clark’s success, along with many other women’s stars, gave the WNBA a huge ratings boost and earned the league nationwide appeal. Senior Writer at The Athletic Matt Futterman joined the WOR Morning Show to talk about Caitlin Clark and the rise of women’s sports in 2024.
“You had Caitlin Clark come along and do this thing that was so easily relatable, she hit three pointers from the middle of the basketball court,” Futterman told guest host Rory O’Neill. “Those are crazy things to be able to do in a game situation…it was just so captivating and so simple and so easy to digest that people just ate it up.”
Futterman believes that Clark’s success along with the US Women’s strong showing at the Summer Olympics will lead to more growth in the future: “It was a very opportunistic year for women’s sports and there no reason why it shouldn’t continue.”
