As revelers continue to celebrate the holiday season, many dessert lovers may be looking to dig in to any new sweet treats they may have received. However, they may want to take notice of a new recall affecting candies sold around the country, including in Missouri.

Gardners Candies has recalled its 1.25 ounce packages of Cappuccino Meltaway Bars (lot number 082725, expiration date 08/27/25) over a potentially dangerous health risk as they may contain undeclared cashews, which could cause a "serious or life-threatening" reaction for consumers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to tree nuts, according to a recall notice shared December 27 by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

The recall also affects the Gardners Meltaway Treat Box in lot numbers 101625 and 112525 as the product contains two of the cappuccino bars alongside other flavors in the holiday-themed box.

The affected products were distributed in retail stores nationwide as well as through mail orders on the Gardners Candies website starting September 1, 2024.

According to the company announcement, the recall was initiated after it was discovered the product didn't list tree nuts as a potential allergen and an investigation showed that the error occurred due to a "temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes."

There have been no illnesses reported as of time of the recall. For more information about the recall or to see product images, visit fda.gov.
