Community Connect: Celebrating Kwanzaa Together

Community Connect always has the hook up to help you out with resources you can use... this week it's all about finding community in celebrating Kwanzaa!

Today is 3rd day of Kwanzaa, the holiday honoring African-American and Pan-African culture and traditions observed after Christmas from December 26th through January 1st. Today is dedicated to the principle of Ujima, which means collective work and responsibility.

Here are a few places you can gather to celebrate:

Malcolm X College is hosting a free Kwanzaa celebration each day through New Years Day for the whole family. Every day at noon, the program starts with a drum call, libation, recounting Kwanzaa history, a lighting of the candles and sharing the principle of the day, culminating with a performance. You’ll find the Kwanzaa celebration and market on the first floor of Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Jackson Boulevard, and parking is free with validation for attendees. Today, Khalidah’s North African Dance Experience will perform at 12:30pm and tomorrow it’s Chi-Village Day.

There’s also a Kwanzaa Open Mic and Art Exhibit today from 5:30-7:30pm at POSE Cultural Art Gallery, Damen & Chicago (2136 W. Chicago Ave, Chicago). Enjoy a showcase of poetry, visual art, and performances by local creatives. It’s free for everyone, whether you want to perform as an artist or poet or just attend. You can reserve a spot for free at this Eventbrite link.

Remember, our community moves forward in the best way possible when we all get the help we need and give the help we can!
