Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson says she plans to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement no more than necessary.
A ten-year-old federal settlement requires the sheriff's office to honor ICE detainers only for people charged with murder, rape, treason, aggravated kidnapping, or armed robbery. Hutson says she plans to follow the law and the settlement.
New Orleans Field Office Director Mellissa Harper says ICE is looking into the possibility of getting the settlement vacated in court.
