According to the United States Food & Drug Administration, the bacteria can cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." Symptoms can range from severe headaches, diarrhea, and light fever, to stillbirths and miscarriages among pregnant women who become infected.

The recall pertains specifically to 12 oz bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets with UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 (back of bag), lot code BFFG327A6 (front of bag) and Best By Date 12/10/2024. No illnesses have been reported as of Tuesday (December 31). Recalled products (listed on fda.gov) were distributed to Walmart locations across the country including stores in Texas and 19 other states.

Health officials are urging consumers who previously purchased the recalled product to throw it out immediately and avoid consumption.
