Today was another big day in Washington, as Mike Johnson ended up getting re-elected as House Speaker on the 1st ballot. All eyes were on the Capitol as Congress gathered to select the next Speaker of the 119th Congress. The big question going in was, would the endorsement of president-elect Donald Trump be enough for Mike Johnson to win re-election? The short answer is yes.
The first vote went down with Johnson receiving 216 votes, he needed 218. Democrat Hakeem Jeffries picked up 215 votes, with 3 voting for 'other'. But then 2 of the 'other' voters, including Texas Congressman Keith Self, switched and gave Johnson the 218 votes that were needed to win.
Congress needed to get the Speaker vote done first, to certify Trump's election win on Monday.
"Mike Johnson is going to win the speakership" said Joe Cunningham, senior editor at Red State, "I don't think there's anybody who frankly wants the job, given how much chaos, and how much pain and torment has come with it for Mike Johnson."
