The next session of the Texas House starts in just over a week, and now Ken Paxton is campaigning against Representative Dustin Burrows, who lost the Republican caucus vote for speaker to Representative Dade Phelan.
Despite opposition to his campaign for the gavel from Attorney General Paxton, the GOP Caucus, and conservative leaders, Burrows hasn't stopped. Representative Steve Toth says Burrows' lobbyist supporters are continuing to harass Texas voters, while claiming to be a conservative group.
Toth said, "People are continuing to be barraged by texts that are coming from the lobby. It's not a conservative group, it's a lobbyist group that's sending out all these text messages."
He also said that the Republicans who are siding with Democrats and backing conservatives are going to face the consequences of turning on their party. He said, "They're going to find out very quickly how painful supporting Burrows is when they run for reelection in the primary."
Toth believes that many of these Republicans know that, and that they'll come around when it actually comes time to vote on January 14th. He said, "You're going to see a tremendous number of Republicans shift their vote when it gets to the floor. Because there's no way they want to throw their hat in with Burrows and the Democrats."
