There are two new sheriffs on the job along the Treasure Coast.
Martin County's William Snyder has retired after more than 50 years in law enforcement. His chief deputy is now the new sheriff.
John Budensiek ran unopposed for the office.
In a post on social media, Snyder likened the end of his law enforcement career as a flight in its final approach.
He wrote that yesterday he heard the "squeak of the wheels and felt it touchdown" and as he got out of the plane, he looked back and said to it "That was a good flight my friend Thank you."
Budensiek started with the Sheriff's Office when he was only 19 years old.
In St. Lucie County, Keith Pearson had been appointed to the sheriff's post by Gov. Ron DeSantis in December 2023 to fill out the term of retired Sheriff Ken Mascara. Pearson ran for election in November but lost to former Port St. Lucie Police Chief Richard Del Toro.
Pearson wrote on social media that his focus has been unwavering, "securing our coastal borders against illegal entry and targeting those peddling the poison fentanyl, protecting our most valuable asset, our children, from those looking to exploit them and ensuring there is a deputy in school to protect them."
Both Budensiek and Del Toro were sworn in on Tuesday.
