A Florida middle school teacher has been reassigned after she was accused of assaulting an 11-year-old student during a field trip.

According to WSVN, the incident unfolded last month when students from McNicol Middle School in Hollywood took a field trip to the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale.

Kendrick, an 11-year-old student, said he had gotten into a fight with another student over a bag of chips during the field trip lunch. The fight was eventually de-escalated.

“Yeah, we said sorry to each other, and then we hugged it out after,” Kendrick recalled.

Kendrick said the situation took a turn after a teacher lunged at him. The student believes the teacher thought he was going to confront the other boy again, even though their fight had ended.

“She choked me and she slapped me,” Kendrick said. “She was just cursing at me. It hurt a little bit, ’cause my throat felt spicy.”

“I’ve had a teacher yell at me, not curse at me, though,” he added. “I don’t think teachers should curse at kids, you know. I never had a teacher do that to me.”

Video of the incident shows a woman yelling profanities at the child. A slapping noise could also be heard in the video.

“You’re a teacher, and this is how you address your student? That’s the language? Is that the vocabulary you use to speak to a kid?” Kendrick’s mother, Yasmine François, said. “I’m not the mom that’s gonna take sides with my son. Like, if you do something bad, you know, you do something bad, so I’m highly disappointed because I feel like I was misled.”

According to WSVN, the teacher involved in the incident was “reassigned pending an investigation" by Broward County Public Schools.
