On December 26th, 23-year-old hiker Hadi Nazari went missing in Australia’s remote Kosciuszko National Park where he was hiking with two friends. After he didn’t meet up with them, the friends searched for him before reporting him missing that evening. A large-scale search operation involving more than 300 people commenced on December 27th, with teams using vehicles, foot patrols, and assistance from the State Emergency Service.
Over the next few days, some of Nazari’s personal items were located, providing clues to his movements, but search crews were unsuccessful in tracking him down. Finally, yesterday (January 8th), a group of hikers spotted him near Blue Lake. He’d survived for 13 days in the wild on foraged berries and two granola bars discovered in a mountain hut. He reportedly called out to the hikers, explaining he’d been lost in the bush.
Police district commander Superintendent Andrew Spliet says Nazari was in good health when they found him with no significant injuries but he was taken to a hospital for further assessment. His family expressed deep relief and joy upon being reunited with him, calling it the "happiest day of our lives."
