The State Fire Marshal's office says house fires have already killed nearly a dozen people in Louisiana in 2025.
Officials say house fires start cropping up as the weather gets colder. Eight house fires have caused 11 deaths in the state since January 1.
Unsafe use of space heaters is a leading cause of fires this time of year. Residents should also take care not to overfill fireplaces or leave candles or open flames unattended.
A working smoke detector in the home is a must, and local fire departments will provide them for free.
