(Des Moines, IA) -- The 91st General Assembly of the Iowa Legislature is underway. One hundred representatives and 50 senators from all 99 Iowa counties came together at the State Capitol building to formally begin on Monday.

Sen. Amy Sinclair (R-Wayne County) will serve as Senate President.

"As we go into our work this session, I hope each of you will consider common sense first and foremost as a primary consideration in the work we do," Sinclair says.

Leaders spent the morning outlining their priorities over the next 110 days. Sen. Jack Whitver (R-Polk County) will serve as Senate Majority Leader.

"We will address the rising cost of living, continue cutting taxes, building new career opportunities and ensure we all have a safe community to call home," Whitver says.

He also thanked those who have helped him in his battle with cancer over the last year. Democrats say they're open to working across the aisle, but still have priorities of their own. Sen. Janice Weiner (D-Johnson County) will serve as Senate Minority Leader.

"Are we helping Iowans feed their kids?" Weiner asks. "Are we helping lower costs for hardworking Iowans? Are we helping create more affordable housing options? And, are we expanding the unemployment safety net?"

The session is scheduled for 110 days, which is May 2nd this year.
