Seth Meyers Recalls Extremely Awkward Elevator Ride With Robert De Niro

Seth Meyers will never forget the awkward elevator ride he shared with the legendary Robert De Niro during an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2002.

The beloved talk show host detailed the interaction (or lack thereof) during Monday's (January 13) episode of Late Night, citing an unexpected absence of excitement and an abundance of silence.

"I remember the first time [De Niro] hosted SNL and had a wonderful time with him. It was, I think, my first year on the show, and I got in an elevator — sort of ran to catch an elevator — not realizing he was the only other person in the elevator. That was not, uh, as exciting as that seemed, because he’s so comfortable being quiet."

Meyers, 51, told guest Graham Norton that he only shared a few words with the 81-year-old Oscar winner, and that was it.

"We’re on the 17th floor and it’s just a long, slow elevator. And at one point he goes, ‘Did you write that sketch?’ And I was like, ‘I did.’ He goes, ‘Pretty good.’ And then just [silence]. When I got off, I’m like, ‘That’s either the best or worst thing that ever happened to me'...I’ll go with best."
