Southern California is under "extreme fire danger" through Thursday (January 16) as powerful winds move through the region, CBS News reports.

Wildfires, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, began to break out in the Los Angeles area last week. The fires have left at least 25 dead, thousands of structures burned down, and forced over 180,000 people to evacuate their homes.

According to forecasters, winds are expected to pick up on Wednesday (January 15) with gusts as strong as 60 miles per hour.

"Southern California will maintain locally extreme fire danger across portions of Ventura and Los Angeles counties through at least Wednesday afternoon with northeasterly wind gusts of 30-50 mph (isolated 60 mph gusts), across mountainous regions," the National Weather Service said.

"Critical fire weather conditions will extend throughout much of the Transverse and Peninsular Ranges today as well. While wind gusts may not be as strong compared to Ventura and Los Angeles counties, the potential for rapid fire growth and localized downed trees and power outages will still remain. "

Forecasters expect conditions to improve on Thursday. The National Weather Service urged residents in high-risk areas to prepare for possible evacuation and "avoid anything that can spark a fire."

"Particularly Dangerous Situation" red flag warnings took effect on Tuesday (January 14) for places at "extreme risk." These warnings will remain in effect through 3 p.m. PT Wednesday.
