A federal judge is temporarily blocking President Trump's executive order that aims to limit birthright citizenship. Oregon joined Washington, Illinois and Arizona in filing a lawsuit against the order.
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said the administration’s attempt to sidestep the 14th Amendment is a clear violation of the United States Constitution. He says no president has the authority to change the Constitution via executive order.
Washington Attorney General Nick Brown said, “This unconstitutional and un-American executive order will hopefully never take effect thanks to the actions states are taking on behalf of their residents.” “Birthright citizenship makes clear that citizenship cannot be conditioned on one’s race, ethnicity or where their parents came from. It’s the law of our nation, recognized by generations of jurists, lawmakers, and presidents, until President Trump’s illegal action. That’s why we’ve stepped in to protect Washingtonians from harm.”
