A fire that started Thursday afternoon in the Otay Mountain wilderness area in the southern part of San Diego County grew to more than 4,000 acres overnight. Evacuation orders and evacuation warnings were issued for areas that are a few miles east of Chula Vista.
The fire was fueled by strong Santa Ana winds. The fire was only 10 percent contained as of 6:30 a.m. Friday morning. Air tankers have been helping in the fight again with daylight and hundreds of firefighters on the ground. The fire spread over steep, rugged terrain and thick vegetation.
The National Weather Service extended the Red Flag fire weather warning until 10 a.m. Friday but rain is likely Saturday evening, through Sunday and into Monday which will help firefighters.
