Major construction is set to transform Interstate 81 in Syracuse as part of a $2.25 billion project. The project aims to tear down the elevated portion of I-81 that runs through Syracuse, with completion expected by 2028. Currently, the focus is on building new infrastructure to manage increased traffic.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), construction is happening simultaneously on several major contracts. Crews are working on new roundabouts, highway exits, and bridges. The northern interchange, where I-81 meets I-481 in Cicero, is undergoing significant changes to create high-speed transitions between highways. This work is expected to be finished by the end of 2025. The southern interchange near Loretto is also being upgraded to improve connections between I-81 and I-481.

The project includes the construction of a triple-decker highway system, with Business Loop 81 at ground level, southbound Business Loop 81 to I-481 north on the second level, and southbound I-81 on the third level. New noise barriers have been installed near Syracuse Hancock International Airport and Bear Trap Creek in Salina.

The NYSDOT has divided the project into eight stages, each handled by separate teams. The demolition of the elevated I-81 is scheduled to start in 2026. The project aims to enhance traffic flow and safety in the region.
