Pro Tip: “Measles Parties” Are A Bad Idea

It should probably go without saying, but in case you weren’t sure, officials in Texas are warning parents against throwing “measles parties.” Similar to chickenpox parties, the idea behind a measles party is that people “deliberately expose themselves or their children to a measles infection in an attempt to build immunity.” Ron Cook, the chief health officer at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, says these parties are a horrible idea because “we can’t predict who’s going to do poorly with measles, be hospitalized, potentially get pneumonia, encephalitis, or pass away from this.” Cook also can’t confirm if there are really parties going on or if it’s just social media hysteria, but…either way…they’re still a dumb idea.
