In the Florida Everglades, scientists are using 40 solar-powered robot rabbits to trap invasive Burmese pythons. These decoys mimic the movement, body heat, and scent of marsh rabbits, a favorite prey for pythons, to lure the snakes into the open. The devices are part of a broader strategy to detect and remove snakes that are harming native wildlife.
The robots are remotely controlled and equipped with sensors to alert handlers. South Florida Water Management officials hope this approach improves detection without putting people at risk. The effort follows other methods like bounty hunts and spotlight searches. Early results show promise in making python removal more efficient and safe…for everyone except the robot bunnies.
