David Byrne and his former Talking Heads bandmates may have reconnected back in 2023 while promoting the re-release of their iconic 80’s concert film Stop Making Sense, but fans hoping for a full-blown reunion tour or new album shouldn’t hold their breath. In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, Byrne admitted that while the reunion felt more comfortable than past interactions, it didn’t spark any desire to revive the band. “I didn’t feel like, ‘Oh, yeah, let’s go out on tour again.’ Or, ‘Let’s make another record,’” he said. “Musically, I’ve gone to a very different place.”

Byrne also reflected on the nature of nostalgia and the challenges of trying to recreate the magic of the past. “It’s pretty much impossible to recapture where you were at that time in your life,” he explained. “For an audience … that was formative music for them at a particular time. They might persuade themselves that they can relive that, but you can’t.” Still, he understands fans who long for a reunion, saying, “I’m a music fan like other people... But you realize you can’t turn the clock back.”

Byrne’s next solo album, Who is the Sky?, is set to drop on September 5th.
