Following the election of radical left-wing Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York City, the Houston Police Officers' Union is now putting out flyers encouraging NYPD officers to come work here in the Space City.

Mamdani's policies are widely expected to make policing in the city of New York far more difficult in the already crime-ridden city. HPOU President Doug Griffith explained the concerns about Mamdani's administration, saying, "He's made multiple comments about how he's going to 'reimagine the police department.' How he's going to change the way the bail system works."

He went on to point out that here in Houston, our police department isn't dealing with those issues. According to Griffith, HPD benefits from the support of everyone from the mayor and City Council to the local population and even state leadership.

He also pointed to the difference that the recently passed Proposition 3 will make in law enforcement and said, "I believe it's one of the best police departments in the nation, and I believe it's going to get better. I invite any police officer to come on down and see what we have to offer."

This could also be an opportunity for HPD to finally overcome the officer shortage that has plagued the department for years. According to Griffith, HPD is short around 1,500 officers, so any number of NYPD officers willing to join HPD would be a welcome help.
