On November 17, 2024, I went into spontaneous preterm labor at just 26 weeks with my identical twin boys. Brooks weighed 2 pounds, and Banks weighed 2 pounds 4 ounces. Our journey began in the NICU, where we spent 119 long and emotional days.
Both of my boys faced more challenges than I could have ever imagined. Brooks had bilateral grade 4 brain bleeds, and Banks had a grade 4 and a grade 2 bleed, which led to hydrocephalus. By the time they were only two months old, each of them had already gone through two brain surgeries. Banks was also diagnosed with two heart defects — pulmonary and aortic stenosis. He was sent to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta for a week to have a heart catheterization and a balloon placed to help his heart function better.
Through all of this, I am incredibly thankful for the Ronald McDonald House. It allowed me to be just a few steps away from my babies instead of two hours away from them. Having a place to stay close by, a warm meal every night, and the comfort of people who cared made all the difference during one of the hardest times of my life.
This experience has changed me in ways I can’t fully put into words. It taught me what true strength, faith, and perseverance really mean. I learned to celebrate every small victory — every breath, every ounce gained, every milestone reached. My boys have shown me what it means to fight, and they remind me every day to be grateful for life’s simplest blessings. Even in the most difficult moments, love and hope carried us through, and for that, I will always be thankful to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
