After mysteriously disappearing more than four years ago from California, Choco, a Dachshund mix, was recently found tied to a fence outside a shelter in Detroit. Staff at Lincoln Park Animal Shelter scanned his microchip and were able to locate his family. The nonprofit Helping Paws and Claws saw a post about his situation and quickly stepped in to help.
Volunteers arranged for Choco’s veterinary checks, organized his travel, and worked with the Lincoln Park Animal Shelter, which cared for him until he could head home. Donations covered the costs, and a stranger even contributed SkyMiles to make the trip possible.
Choco’s owner, Patricia, says she was stunned by the distance he’d traveled and shares that he’d always been something of an escape artist. She says the experience proves how valuable microchipping pets can be. Choco is now back with his family, including his two young human siblings.
