Los Angeles has introduced a new pilot program to improve the welfare of dogs living on Skid Row. Announced by Mayor Karen Bass, the initiative involves a collaboration between the LAPD and Los Angeles Animal Services to address animal cruelty and provide support to pet owners in the area.
The program aims to keep pets with their owners whenever possible while holding those who commit animal cruelty accountable. According to Mayor Bass, "This collaborative approach will use specially trained LAPD officers, working with Animal Services staff to support animal welfare by bringing dedicated personnel, strategic investigation practices, a uniform approach to accountability, and immediate relief whenever possible."
The initiative will begin in Skid Row, an area with a high volume of animal welfare check requests, and could potentially expand citywide. The program includes training LAPD officers to recognize and investigate cases of animal cruelty. Officers will also work with local organizations to provide essentials like food, leashes, and beds to pet owners in need.
Residents are encouraged to report crimes against animals to Crimestoppers at LAcrimestoppers.org or by calling 800-222-TIPS. If a crime is witnessed in progress, people should call 911.
The initiative aims to enhance animal welfare by ensuring coordinated investigations and timely responses, reflecting the city's commitment to improving the lives of animals and their owners in the area.
