(IOWA) -- One of the Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in Syria yesterday has been identified. Nate Howard, son of the chief of police for the Meskwaki National Police Department in Eastern Iowa has been confirmed by his father as one of the victims in a Facebook post. Another soldier from Iowa also died, as well as a civilian interpreter. Three other Iowa soldiers were injured. No other names have been released. The group was part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, based out of Boone, Iowa.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said in a press release, the soldiers were killed in an enemy attack Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025, in Palmyra, Syria. The attack occurred while conducting a key leader engagement as part of their assigned mission in the ongoing counter-ISIS and counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
