The 1959 Martin D-18E guitar played by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana's iconic 1993 "MTV Unplugged" performance has found a permanent home at the Royal College of Music. The guitar, with its rich history and emotional significance, was purchased for a record-breaking six million dollars in 2020 and donated to the college by Peter Freedman.
The instrument, which holds a special place in music history, will be part of an international touring exhibition in 2026, offering fans a close-up look at the iconic guitar that helped shape the sound of a generation. This generous donation represents a departure from the trend of keeping iconic instruments in private collections, allowing the guitar to be studied, admired, and celebrated by music enthusiasts and aspiring musicians at the college.
The guitar's presence at the Royal College of Music serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of music and its ability to inspire generations of artists and fans alike.
