UGI Utilities has issued a safety alert due to an increase in carbon monoxide (CO) emergencies in Pennsylvania. The utility company emphasizes the importance of recognizing CO poisoning symptoms and taking preventive measures, especially during winter when cases typically rise due to heating equipment issues or running equipment in enclosed spaces like garages. CO is a colorless, odorless gas that can be fatal if inhaled.
Symptoms of CO poisoning include headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and dizziness. UGI advises residents to ensure they have working carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of their homes and to regularly service heating systems. Additional signs of CO buildup in a home include significant condensation on windows, pets becoming sluggish, and residents experiencing flu-like symptoms.
UGI recommends checking chimney connections for damage, ensuring vents are unobstructed, and using caution with unvented space heaters. If CO poisoning is suspected, individuals should seek fresh air immediately and call 911 or UGI at 800-276-2722. According to the CDC, over 100,000 people in the U.S. visit the emergency room annually due to CO poisoning. Anyone who smells gas should evacuate and contact emergency services.
