Memorial services are planned for Michael Ryan, a dedicated member of the Phoenicia Fire Department, who passed away on Saturday (December 13) following a medical emergency while responding to an injured hiker in Shandaken. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home on Main Street in Phoenicia. A funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday at noon at Saint Francis de Sales Church, also located in Phoenicia.

Michael Joseph Ryan, born on March 22, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, was a man defined by his service and bravery. He moved to Phoenicia with his family in 1970 and graduated from Onteora High School. Ryan's career began with his enlistment in the United States Air Force in 1983, where he served with distinction, including deployments to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq. He received numerous accolades, such as the Iraq Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal. After his active duty, he continued to serve in the New York Air National Guard at Stewart Air Force Base.

Ryan's commitment to public service extended beyond his military career. He served for 25 years with the Kingston Police Department, where he was known for his leadership and professionalism. Even after his retirement in 2021, he continued to instruct recruits at the Police Academy and served as Fire Commissioner with the M.F. Whitney Hose Co.

Michael Ryan is survived by his wife of 25 years, Debra Jo, his mother, Finola Ryan, and his siblings. His legacy of heroism and selflessness will be remembered by his family, friends, and the community he served. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the M.F. Whitney Hose Co.
