National Grid is preparing for extensive renovations at its historic headquarters in Downtown Syracuse ahead of the building's 100th anniversary. The iconic Art Deco building on Erie Boulevard West is renowned for its colorful lighting displays, which celebrate holidays and community events. The utility company has not disclosed the exact cost of the renovations but estimates it to be a few million dollars.
According to WSYR-TV, the renovations will address general wear and tear, reinforce structural deficiencies, and preserve the building's historical features. Immediate repairs will focus on the front doors, damaged in a car crash in May 2024. Other planned work includes installing a new roof, fabricating historically accurate panel replacements, and polishing stainless steel.
The project, designed by Nelson Associates Architectural Engineers, must comply with the City of Syracuse Landmark Preservation Board. The building, constructed in 1932 as the main office of the Niagara Hudson Power Company, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
The renovations follow the debut of a new lighting system last year, which utilizes energy-efficient LED fixtures to display millions of colors. As National Grid spokesperson Jared Paventi explained, "The primary focus of this project is to address and repair general wear and tear, reinforce areas with structural deficiencies, and preserve the building’s unique historical characteristics."
The renovations are expected to continue through 2025, with further improvements planned to maintain the building's status as a point of civic pride and a representation of art deco design in the region.
