(Des Moines, IA) -- The City of Des Moines has announced its new fire chief: Johnathan Lund.
Lund currently serves as the Fire Marshal for the Des Moines Fire Department. He began his career in Des Moines in 2008 as a Fire Protection Engineer and was promoted to Fire Marshal in 2013. He also spent 12 years as a captain and EMT with the Norwalk Fire Department.
Lund shared a message with residents: “This is your fire department. Our firehouses, fire trucks and ambulances, our equipment, and our firefighters are here for you, and we will do our very best to keep you safe.”
His first day as chief will be December 23.
Lund thanked his wife, saying, “You’re my solid foundation, my best friend, and an amazing mother to our daughters. Thank you for the sacrifices you make to allow me to serve the residents and guests of Des Moines.”
He comes from a firefighting family. His mother served with the Milwaukee Fire Department for more than two decades. Lund said, “To my mom, who served the Milwaukee Fire Department for over 20 years, thank you for letting me grow up in the firehouse, and to both of my parents, for showing me what service to the public should look like.”
Lund will be Des Moines’ 14th fire chief. The department operates 11 stations with more than 300 employees. The current chief is retiring this month after 16 years in the position.
Mayor Connie Boesen said, “A good leader grows talent within their department, and we are here with one of those people.”
