An electrical malfunction caused a house fire on Syracuse's North Side early Thursday morning (December 18), displacing four residents. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 113 Peters Street around 3:08 a.m., where they found smoke emerging from the front door of the two-and-a-half-story home. According to Capt. Erik Caster, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Fire Department, the fire originated in a first-floor bedroom.
Fire crews quickly acted, containing the blaze within 10 minutes and fully extinguishing it in about 15 minutes. Thanks to functioning smoke detectors, all residents safely evacuated the building. The upstairs apartment was unoccupied and under construction at the time. The fire caused minor damage, along with smoke and water damage, and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters. Crews remained on the scene for several hours to assist investigators and secure the building.
