The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has issued a warning about an illegal driving school operating in Albany. The school, known as Learn to Drive, is located on Lark Street and falsely claims to be New York State certified on its website. However, the DMV has revoked its operating license, and it is not authorized to conduct driving lessons or pre-licensing courses.
According to the DMV, Learn to Drive continues to offer services despite its revoked license, putting students and other road users at risk. Complaints against the school include students paying for lessons that were never provided, being asked to drive uninspected vehicles, and being used to pick up and drop off individuals not receiving instruction.
DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder emphasized the risks associated with such illegal operations, stating, "This kind of illegal operation does more than dupe victims out of their money — it jeopardizes the safety of every person that the business provides driving instruction to and everyone else on the road around them."
DMV officials urge prospective drivers to only use licensed and vetted driving schools to ensure proper instruction and valid certification. The DMV provides an online search tool to help consumers find approved driving schools and pre-licensing course providers based on location and vehicle type.
