Three inmates, including one facing a murder charge have escaped jail in Georgia, the DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox said in a statement obtained by ABC News on Monday (December 22).
“We take this breach very seriously and are working diligently to ensure these individuals are safely returned to custody as quickly as possible,” Maddox said, though not providing additional details about how the inmates escaped.
The three fugitives were identified as Stevenson Charles, 24; Yusuf Minor, 31; and Naod Yohannes, 25, according to Atlanta News First. Charles is facing charges of murder and armed robbery; Minor is facing two counts of armed robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; and Yohannes is facing charges of simple assault, arson and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution.
The men are suspected to potentially be armed and should be considered dangerous to the public, according to the sheriff's office.
“The public is urged to exercise extreme caution and should not approach them,” the department said.
The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit was reported to be working alongside patrol officers and other local law enforcement officials in the ongoing investigation. The DeKalb County Jail is located in Decatur, which is about 10 miles east of downtown Atlanta.
