As the holiday season unfolds, New Jersey residents are experiencing a welcome drop in gas prices. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Garden State is now $2.87, marking a decrease of six cents from last week and 13 cents from last month. This decline coincides with an anticipated record high in holiday travel.
AAA projects that 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the year-end holiday period, which runs from December 20 to January 1. This represents a 2.2% increase over last year, with 109.5 million of those travelers expected to journey by car. The drop in gas prices is contributing to the popularity of road trips, as driving remains the most convenient and cost-effective mode of transportation.
Despite the increase in travel, the national average for gas prices has remained stable, with AAA reporting a national average of $2.89 as of December 22. The decrease in prices is attributed to low crude oil prices and a strong gasoline supply, even as demand increases during the holidays. This year marks the cheapest December at the pump since 2020, providing relief to travelers across the country.
As more people take to the roads, AAA and other organizations are emphasizing the importance of safety. December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, and drivers are urged to plan safe rides home and remain vigilant during this busy travel period.
