The Guardian Angels are commemorating the one-year anniversary of the tragic subway attack in Brooklyn that claimed the life of Debrina Kawan, a woman from Toms River, New Jersey. Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, led the remembrance ceremony at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station, where Kawan was set on fire while sleeping on an F train. Sliwa described the attack as unimaginable and emphasized the ongoing efforts of the Guardian Angels to ensure no one suffers in silence.

Following the attack, the Guardian Angels resumed their patrols of the New York City subway system, a move reminiscent of their activities during the crime-ridden era of the late 1970s. Sliwa announced plans to increase the number of volunteers and enhance their training to address the current safety concerns in the subway system. The group aims to provide wellness checks and support to homeless and emotionally disturbed individuals, as well as report any issues to the NYPD.

The attack on Kawan was reportedly unprovoked, and authorities have charged Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, with first-degree murder and arson. Surveillance footage showed Zapeta-Calil watching as Kawan was engulfed in flames. Despite efforts to save her, Kawan was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the Guardian Angels' efforts have been met with some criticism, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has increased police presence in the subway system to address safety concerns. However, Sliwa remains critical of the city's response, urging citizens to be proactive and report suspicious activities. The Guardian Angels continue their patrols, hoping to prevent future tragedies and honor Kawan's memory with a wreath at the site of the incident.
