Holiday Travel: What You Need To Know

The holiday travel rush in on.

Law enforcement and travel experts alike advises travelers to “expect the unexpected.” That "unexpected" can entail from so many things like weather delays, mechanical issues with your car, a plane or train, to even medical emergencies.

AAA estimates more than eight-million people will be flying domestically this year with Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando among the top destinations. According to AAA, nearly 200,000 people will take buses, trains or cruise ships this holiday season. That’s up 45% from pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The West Coast is bracing for a major winter storm. Forecasters say an atmospheric river will impact Southern California during Christmas week, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous travel conditions. The National Weather Service warn the duration of this storm raises the risk of flooding and mudslides, with road and airport delays expected during one of the busiest holiday travel periods.

Average gas prices in the U.S. are down a nickel a gallon from last week. Triple-A reports today's average price is two-dollars and 85 cents a gallon. That's down 22 cents from a month ago.

The highest average price is in Hawaii at four-dollars-42 cents a gallon while the cheapest is in Oklahoma at two-dollars-29 cents.

In Florida, AAA reports today that a gallon of regular is averaging $2.86.

For Christmas travel, pack solid foods (cookies, meats, cakes) in carry-ons but liquids (jams, gravy, eggnog > 3.4oz) in checked bags; use gift bags instead of wrapping paper for easy inspection; and pack electronics and toys in carry-ons with accessible spots for X-ray screening, remembering items like snow globes or realistic toy weapons must be checked. Always check the TSA's "What Can I Bring" tool for specific items.
