State Senator Jim Tedisco is seeking help from Pope Leo XIV and newly appointed Albany Bishop Mark O'Connell to expedite payments to over 1,100 former Saint Clare's Hospital workers in Schenectady, New York. These workers recently won a $54.2 million jury award after a court found the Albany Catholic Diocese and other defendants liable for mismanaging the hospital's pension plan. However, the punitive phase of the trial has been delayed due to bankruptcy filings by two defendants.

Senator Tedisco has been a strong advocate for the pensioners, many of whom have lost their homes or returned to work. He sent a letter to the Vatican, urging intervention to ensure the pensioners receive their awarded funds promptly. Tedisco stated, "It's time to do the right thing and settle this once and for all."

According to a press release, Tedisco emphasized the need for swift action, especially during the Christmas season. The jury's decision followed a lawsuit by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who accused church leaders of breaching their fiduciary duties.

The Albany Diocese acknowledged the pensioners' plight and expressed willingness to support them. Bishop O'Connell stated that the church would make amends if found liable.

The case highlights the financial struggles faced by former hospital employees, who have been without their pensions since 2018. The court will schedule a trial to determine punitive damages.
