Centro, the public transit agency in Syracuse has received a $9.3 million federal grant to purchase new buses for its upcoming Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines. The funding, announced by Congressman John Mannion, will allow Centro to buy nine custom-designed buses that run on compressed natural gas. These buses are part of a larger $35 million service redesign aimed at improving public transportation in Syracuse.

The new BRT lines will form an X-shape across the city, enhancing connectivity between key locations such as Syracuse University, Destiny USA, and Onondaga Community College. Buses on these routes will run every 12 to 15 minutes, providing faster service to low-income riders who rely on public transportation. The initiative aims to support those without access to cars and help them reach employment opportunities more efficiently.

Centro plans to implement technology to keep traffic lights green for buses at busy intersections, ensuring smoother and quicker commutes. The project is part of a broader state effort, with more than $100 million awarded for similar projects across New York. According to Syracuse.com, the new buses are expected to be operational by 2028.
