MADISON (WKOW) – Madison police have two persons of interest in custody following the city's fifth homicide of the year. Two men were shot in a drive-by on the north side of town. One of the victims died.
Police were dispatched to a local hospital and Portage Road on Madison's north side late Saturday night. Officers said the victims were driving in the neighborhood when another car began shooting at them.
22-year-old Abubacarr Darboe was killed in the shooting and his brother was also shot and taken the hospital. Darboe, known as "Buba," was originally from The Gambia, where his parents still live.
"Just one hour before he got killed, he was sitting with his family and talking about his graduation plans, how he wanted to go to Gambia before he pick up the job," said State Rep. Samba Baldeh, who personally knows the family.
Buba was set to graduate in May from Vanderbilt with a major in economics and was known as a former soccer star at East High School in Madison. Baldeh said Buba was an excellent kid who always gave back to his community.
"I visited with the family. People prayed, people cried, people consult each other, consult the family, particularly, but we also talk about our values, our culture and our religion," said Baldeh.
Baldeh said the community is in shock and struggling with the pain of losing someone to a senseless crime. The family believes the brothers were mistaken for others.
"We may have loved to have Buba here for the next 90 years or so, but God has decided that he's going to go now. And so therefore it's an act of God. And so let's accept it that way," said Baldeh.
Detectives have identified the suspect's car and two people were arrested early Sunday morning. Madison police said they were booked into Dane County Jail on Department of Corrections warrants.
A GoFundMe has been created to help the family through this difficult time.
