A South Carolina mother has been sentenced to decades in prison after admitting she drowned her six-year-old daughter, dressed the child for burial, and then attempted to kill her older daughter in the same way.

According to PEOPLE, Jamie Michele Bradley-Brun, 40, pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder in the May 2023 attack inside the family’s home on Saint Helena Island in Beaufort County. Bradley-Brun was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of her younger daughter and a concurrent 30-year sentence for attempting to kill her eight-year-old daughter.

Prosecutors said Bradley-Brun woke her six-year-old daughter in the early morning hours and told her to undress and get into the bathtub. After killing the child, authorities said Bradley-Brun placed her daughter’s body on a bed and dressed her in what was described as a “funeral dress.”

Bradley-Brun then woke her eight-year-old daughter and attempted to repeat the act. The child survived after fighting back and screaming, which alerted her older sister. Prosecutors said the older sibling intervened, grabbed the eight-year-old, and ran outside to call 911.

Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home around 1:25 a.m. after receiving the emergency call.

During sentencing, Deputy Solicitor Mary Jones emphasized that the crime was intentional and planned, rejecting claims that it stemmed from mental illness or substance abuse.

“This wasn’t an accident or a mental health crisis,” Jones said. “This defendant planned it. She is competent, and she knew what she was doing.”

Jones also said attempts to blame alcoholism or others weren't valid defenses under South Carolina law.

Bradley-Brun’s guilty plea spared the surviving children from having to testify at trial. Prosecutors said the sentences ensure she will spend the remainder of her life in prison.
