The National Guard has deployed 350 troops to New Orleans.
A Pentagon spokesperson says the soldiers will remain for the next two months.
The Pentagon says the Louisiana troops are under the command of the state's Republican Governor Jeff Landry, who says the deployment will be used to crack down on crime in the city.
The Guard members will assist police with security in the French Quarter for New Year's Eve, at the Sugar Bowl, and during Mardi Gras.
