FAIRPLAIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Sheridan Fire Chief Brandon Stowell says the two people who were inside a modular home when it caught fire early Friday morning in Fairplain Township got out safely.
"And we contacted the Red Cross to help the family that was living there (find shelter)," Stowell told WOOD Radio.
He said the home on West Fenwick Road at Miller Road in southern Montcalm County was destroyed.
A man has set up a GoFundMe page that indicates his grandmother escaped with only her shoes and coat. Stowell said the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen, but it's still being investigated.
"We're not 100 percent sure yet or at this time, but we assume it had something to do with a possible gas leak that ignited in the kitchen area," Stowell said.
The fire spread after that, engulfing the modular home in flames.
Assisting the Sheridan Fire Department were crews from Greenville Public Safety, the Montcalm Township Fire Department, the Orleans Fire Department and the Ronald Township Fire Department.
Firefighters sprayed 19,000 gallons of water to douse the flames.
