Chappell Roan has walked back a tribute she initially shared following the death of French film icon Brigitte Bardot, saying she was unaware of the late actress’s controversial history.
Bardot died at her home in Saint-Tropez at age 91, according to a spokesperson. Shortly after the news broke, Roan — whose real name is Kayleigh Amstutz — posted a photo of Bardot to her Instagram Stories, crediting the actress as an inspiration behind her 2023 song Red Wine Supernova and offering condolences.
The singer later removed the post and issued a clarification, stating she did not know about Bardot’s past political views and comments. In a follow-up message, Roan said she does not condone those views, explaining her decision to delete the tribute.
Bardot, who rose to global fame in the 1950s and later became a prominent animal rights activist, was also a deeply polarizing figure in France. Over the years, she was fined multiple times for public remarks deemed racist or inflammatory toward Muslims. Her fourth husband, Bernard d’Ormale, previously served as an advisor to far-right political leader Jean-Marie Le Pen.
In recent years, Bardot had largely lived out of the public eye. She reportedly underwent surgery for a serious illness last fall and had been recovering at home. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.
She is survived by her son, Nicolas-Jacques Charrier.
