With temperatures dipping into the 40's, local officials are activating cold weather emergency plans. In Broward, a cold weather shelter is open at the Salvation Army in Ft. Lauderdale through Thursday morning. The Miami-Dade Homeless Trust is opening shelters through Friday. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Erika Benitez says if you're heating your home for the first time in months or years-remember safety comes first. Remember to plug them directly into the wall, not an extension cord and turn them off before you leave the house.
