Margate, FL - A New Year’s Day crash in Margate left a family displaced after a pickup truck allegedly veered off the road and crashed into their home, causing severe structural damage and a gas leak.
The incident occurred Thursday afternoon near Northwest 66th Avenue and Northwest 8th Court, according to Margate police.
Authorities said a pickup truck was traveling through the residential neighborhood when it suddenly lost control and struck the side of a single family home.
The impact was captured on a home security camera, which shows the truck driving at speed before swerving and crashing directly into the house.
The homeowners said they were inside the residence with their two children at the time of the crash.
They reported feeling the house shake violently upon impact before realizing a vehicle had struck the structure.
Shortly afterward, the family noticed the smell of gas and quickly evacuated the home out of concern for their safety.
Emergency crews responded and confirmed the truck damaged a gas line during the crash.
Fire rescue and utility workers secured the area to prevent further danger. No injuries were reported among the occupants of the home, the driver, or first responders.
City officials later deemed the home unsafe to occupy due to the extent of the damage, effectively condemning the property.
The family has since been forced to find temporary housing while repairs and inspections are underway.
Police have not released details regarding potential charges or whether impairment or speed played a role.
The driver’s actions remain under investigation, and authorities have stated that the crash is still being reviewed.
