The driver involved in a deadly car crash that injured heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua and killed two of his friends in Nigeria has been charged.

According to the Associated Press, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged with dangerous and reckless driving in southwestern Ogun state following the crash earlier this week, police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyisaid.

The vehicle carrying Joshua, Sina Ghami, and Latif “Latz” Ayodele struck a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a major highway linking Ogun state to Lagos. Ghami and Ayodele were killed in the collision. Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion, sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized before being discharged on Wednesday (December 31).

Kayode is facing four charges, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid national driver’s license. Police said he was taken into custody on Thursday (January 1) after being released from the hospital and was later granted bail set at 5 million naira (about $3,480).

The case has been adjourned until January 20, when trial proceedings are expected to begin.
