As 2026 kicks off, gas prices across the United States have dipped below $3 per gallon. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average price for a gallon of gas is currently $2.83. This marks a decrease of seven cents from the previous month.
Hawaii holds the title for the most expensive gas in the country, with prices averaging $4.42 per gallon. Meanwhile, Oklahoma boasts the cheapest average at $2.24 per gallon. Other states with notable averages include Vermont at $3.045, New Jersey at $2.825, and Delaware at $2.832.
The drop in gas prices comes after the holiday season, which often influences fuel costs. The AAA noted that the decrease is part of a broader trend of falling prices as the year begins. This trend is welcomed by consumers who are eager to see continued relief at the pump.
Looking ahead, it remains to be seen how gas prices will fluctuate throughout the year, as they are often influenced by various factors, including global oil prices and domestic demand.
