New Year's Resolutions for Local Leaders in 2026

The year is here, 2026. That means’ it’s time once again this year for the New Year’s resolutions that many probably wish our local leaders should make.

Mayor Todd Gloria and the City Council should resolve to spend a couple of hours every day in the new year in Balboa Park so they can hear for themselves why almost everyone is really ticked off about the paid parking.

Maybe they will get so tired of it, they will do what everyone wanted them to do and not charge for parking.

The members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors should make a resolution to not be so partisan in their officially non-partisan offices.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl could make a resolution to resolve the shortage of police officers but then it would take the City Council to resolve to find the money to do it.

The San Diego Association of Governments, SANDAG, should pass a resolution to applaud their CEO Mario Orso for saying recently that the agency must use a “reality-based approach” based on budget constraints.

And every city and county and community leader should finally and fully resolve to do more and do it better to reduce one of San Diego’s still biggest problems.

And that’s the thousands of people who are homeless, in our cities and neighborhoods, many living in squalid conditions and many suffering from major mental health issues, and many without hope.

But maybe 2026 will bring them more hope.
